Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). In 2019, a new coronavirus was identified as the cause of a disease outbreak that originated in China. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. As of February of 2023, there have been over 680 million infections with 6.8 million deaths. 

Coronaviruses are nonsegmental and enveloped viruses with single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) ranging between 26 to 32 kb in length. Its structural proteins include membrane glycoprotein, envelope protein, nucleocapsid protein, and the spike protein. In silico analyses showed that the M protein of SARS-CoV-2 had the triple helix bundle, forms a single 3-transmembrane domain, and is homologous to the prokaryotic sugar transport protein.
