Product Details
Anzu wyliei is the first oviraptorosaur dinosaur to be well-documented from fossils found in the United States. It roamed the ancient landscapes of what are now North and South Dakota. Like other members of the Oviraptorosauria group, Anzu had a tall, bony crest on its head, a uniquely shaped beak, and scientists believe its body was covered in feathers. Compared to its relatives, Anzu was surprisingly large, reaching lengths of more than 10 feet.
- Scientific Name: Anzu wyliei (“Anzu” is a feathered demon of Sumerian mythology, “wyliei” honors Wylie J. Tuttle, the grandson of a donor to the museum where the fossils are held)
- History: Although the first fossils of Anzu wyliei were unearthed in 1998, this unique dinosaur wasn’t officially described by scientists until 2014. Before Anzu was identified, oviraptorosaurs were thought to exist only in Asia. Its distinctive beak suggests that Anzu had an adaptable diet, likely feeding on everything from plants and eggs to small creatures, making it a versatile feeder in its ancient ecosystem.
