Camarasaurus

Camarasaurus was a massive plant-eating sauropod, reaching lengths of around 75 feet. It roamed the Earth during the Late Jurassic, approximately 150 million years ago, and evidence suggests it sometimes crossed paths—and clashed—with the fearsome predator Allosaurus.

• Scientific Name: Camarasaurus, meaning ‘Chambered lizard’
• History: Although Camarasaurus was initially found and named in the late 1870s, paleontologists didn’t uncover a fully complete skeleton until 1925. Since then, numerous well-preserved skeletons have been discovered—an unusual find for sauropods, whose delicate skulls often break apart before they can fossilize. Camarasaurus stands out from other long-necked dinosaurs with its short, deep skull, unlike the longer, narrower skulls seen in relatives like Diplodocus and Apatosaurus.
